Energy Seminar 1: Findings of the IPCC Fifth Assessment – what they mean for energy

Introduction

In the first seminar of 2015 we shall be discussing aspects of what climate science is indicating for potential climate change, the impact of change, and policy consequences.  Professor Jim Skea will present a summary of some of the main conclusions to be drawn from the reports of the three main IPCC working groups that were published in 2014 – science, impacts and mitigation, and their synthesis. He will concentrate on impacts and mitigation, and also discuss some of the complementarity of mitigation and adaptation.

Professor Jim Skea, CBE, FRSA, FEI, HonFSE

Professor Jim Skea holds the Chair in Sustainable Energy at Imperial College. He is a founding member of the UK’s Committee on Climate Change and is Vice-Chair of Working Group III (Mitigation) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Jim is currently Research Councils UK Energy Strategy Fellow. The Fellowship was established in 2012 in response to recommendations from the International Review of Energy Research undertaken by the Research Councils in 2010. There are two roles: the synthesis of a Prospectus to explore research, skills and training needs across the energy landscape; and a related research programme focusing on the effectiveness of systems of energy innovation internationally.
